This entry is part of a map titled: "Seattle to Thailand and Back".
We're at Ko Phetra on our way to Langkawi, Malaysia which is just = south of here. The island is beautiful. It's a very tall limestone = peak that is a popular place for collecting birds nests which are = worth their weight in gold, or so the story goes. We chatted to some = birds nest collectors on the beach yesterday as they were arriving = back from a collection and they let us handle some of the nests. We = offered them the equivalent of $30 for one tiny nest and they wouldn't = take it. I think the bird is a Tern of some sort and the entire nest = is snow white and is made out of the birds saliva exclusively. Areas of nest collection are guarded fiercely by the collectors. They = build huts on top of tall rocks or that hang from cliff faces and live = there just to keep and eye on their prizes. These islands have still not recovered completely from the devastation = left by the tsunami. Yesterday we were at a beach just north of here = and the huts on the beach are still in a shambles and they're slowly = working to recover. We found a few tsunami warning signs that look = like they were knocked flat by the previous tsunami. We gave the sea = gypsies on the beach some clothes and other goodies to help them out. The fishing here is great. I've been catching (and releasing) various = species on my fly rod. The local fisherman have set up a net on a = small point close to where we've anchored and there are a lot of = larger fish that mill around outside the nets that I've been catching. We're both fully recovered after eating something bad. Time for = breakfast. Hope you're all well. Regards, Mark (and a sleeping Kerry) Comments No comments yet - be the first! | |||||||||||||||||
